    • For us, travel reminds us of moments that have been forgotten, allowing us to meet ourselves.
We are always waiting for moments that will open our hearts in unfamiliar places. Let's travel to Mokpo in search of those moments.

Retro in Mokpo is not just retro style, but real retro. Signboards from the 1970s and 1980s fill the alleyways of Mokpo, and Japanese-style buildings that are vividly stained with time itself naturally blend into the streets.
In the 1920s and 1930s, modernization flourished in Mokpo, and modern capital flowed in naturally as a port city.
Of course, although the port was opened as a military strategic point reflecting the ambitions of Japanese colonial rule, there is no doubt that Mokpo, a small fishing village, has transformed into a bustling metropolis.

Mokpo's Modern History Museum is located on a hill, overlooking the port of Mokpo.
Red bricks and green vines covering entire buildings like a decoration adds character to the building's atmosphere.
Modern History Hall 1, as it was divided into two buildings, was used as the Japanese consulate, and Hall 2 was a building of the Oriental Development Company, which was built for the purpose of exploiting the economy of Joseon.
It is our heartbreaking history that reminds us of the classic song Tears of Mokpo.

If it is a suitable environment to be called a base of culture & art, a natural environment should support it so that local residents can enjoy culture & art on a daily basis, and Mokpo is perfect for meeting that condition.
From the picturesque Dadohae and the far off small islands which you can see when standing in the sea, to the red sunset lavishly emitting scarlet light.
Perhaps because of this environment, many people who made a mark in the history of Korean culture and arts are from Mokpo.
There are traces of these people everywhere in Mokpo, such as Lee Nan-young, who sang "Tears of Mokpo," local novelist Park Hwa-seong, playwright Kim Woo-jin, and oriental painter Nam Nong Heo Geon.

There are also projects created together with local residents. This is Shihwa Alley. In Seosan-dong, Mokpo, under Yudalsan Mountain, there is Shihwa Alley with its beautiful poems and paintings.
If you walk step by step down the tall alleys, you will find text and pictures written and drawn by local residents. Looking at an old man's words expressed in clumsy handwriting, I felt touched and moved as if I had received a gift.

      City of Taste, Mokpo

What should we eat in the city of taste, Mokpo? Mokpo is close to the sea, so you can eat fresh seafood anytime.
It'll make you go hoarse if you try to name all the specialties of Mokpo as there are so many, including small octopus, skate, cutlassfish, octopus, and yellow corvina. I named just a few specialties of Mokpo.

When it comes to Mokpo, it's octopus. When it comes to octopus, it's Mokpo. Mokpo's thin-legged small octopus has been considered one of the best health foods since ancient times because it is believed it can uplift even a fallen cow, and it has been loved as a representative specialty of Mokpo because it is much softer and tastier than the octopuses of other locales.
Tough and cheap octopuses are red, whereas Mokpo's small thin-legged octopuses are gray.
From September to February when winter ends, they are in season, so you can cook various dishes, such as octopus sashimi, stir-fry, octopus soup, and Yeonpo-tang soup.

Skate, with its unique tangy flavor and chewy texture, is one of Mokpo's most distinguishing marine products.

It is always served at feasts in Mokpo. First-timers may be intimidated by the strong aroma and taste, but once you take a bite, you will come back for more.
홍Skate is usually fermented and then served as sashimi, a steamed dish, or in a soup. The rich taste that wraps around the tip of the tongue is addictive. Skate tastes best when wrapped with boiled pork and matured kimchi and served with raw rice wine.

Mokpo yellow corvinas, which are not fishy at all and have an excellent savory taste, come up to the west coast from March to April, a good time for spawning, and are often caught off the coast of Mokpo.
The yellow corvinas in season are scattered all over the fish market. Storing nutrients in the body, they shine and have a golden color.
They are characterized by the hard bones on its head embedded in a diamond shape. It can be eaten raw, or eaten after being dried in the sea breeze of Mokpo as gulbi. It'll help you finish a bowl of rice easily.
Mokpo's shoulders are moving up and down

Marine culture is quite different from what land people know. The people by the sea live in a different way from those who live deep in the inland, and they have different attitudes towards nature and different ways of dealing with life.
Mokpo is a central city on the southwest coast, where marine culture is concentrated. Just as cultures accumulate and become history, the history of maritime culture in Mokpo is now blooming in the form of a festival.

The Mokpo Port Festival, which has been held since 2006 to promote and preserve the maritime culture of Mokpo Port, is held in the entirety of Samhakdo, Mokpo City and the Dongmyeong-dong Fish Market.
It is full of events that bring rich experiences, such as fish markets with abundant seafood and the Mokpo Port's Big Catch Festival, which contains all the hopes for full loads of fish.

Yudalsan, which borders the Dadohae at the tip of the southern island, is bustling with springtime picknickers who want to enjoy various spring flowers such as forsythia, cherry blossoms, magnolias, and royal azaleas.
At the Yudalsan Spring Festival held every April, various programs like treasure hunts along the Yudalsan Dulle-gil trail small concerts in the Haneul Garden are held.

A unique event called Mokpo Port Busking is also rapidly emerging as a new tourism resource for Mokpo.
Harbor Busking, where buskers of various genres, such as acoustic, jazz, dance, and magicians, gather from all over the country to present their wonderful performances. It is held to build an image of Mokpo as a young musician's city full of talent and passion.
It is a place where you can feel the rich emotions of talented buskers from all over the country.

      Thrilling, electrifying, healing Mokpo

Moving away from one-dimensional travel where you only take pictures and sightsee, activity based travel is becoming a trend that allows you to enjoy various experiences according to your taste.
As the demand for individual free travel to enjoy various experiences is increasing, various activities tailored to the characteristics of the region are attracting attention.

In line with this trend, Mokpo offers experiential activities so that you can enjoy various leisure activities. Here are a few of them.

You can enjoy canoeing at Mokpo Samhakdo, which was named after three cranes coming down on it.
Canoeing is an activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and genders, and does not require any special skills. This is a marine sport that can be enjoyed leisurely while feeling the wind and water. It is sometimes called healing on water.

The Skywalk, installed in the sea in front of Yudal Amusement Park in Daeban-dong, Mokpo, is located at a height of 15 m from the sea and has a total length of 54 m, and it provides thrills and fun with its view of the sea.
As you walk, you can see the scenery of Mokpo Bridge and the sunset, which has made it a hot spot in Mokpo.
The Gohado Island right in front of it and the Mokpo Marine Cable Car that looks like it's flying over the sea are also very cool, so I recommend you to try these out.

The Mokpo Marine Cable Car, the best in the country, starts at the northern foothill of Yudalsan Mountain, goes up to the chin of the summit of Yudalsan Mountain, then goes down southward and crosses the 820m-long sea again and carries on until the Gohado Island.
The length is 3.23 km, the round trip ride is for 40 minutes, and if you get off at the stations located on the way and enjoy the surrounding scenery, it will take more than 2 hours.
It's like a package tour. You will have a lovely time enjoying the scenery in the cable car and having a cup of coffee at the station on the way.
