Orvieto, Italy, where the ‘Slow City’ movement first started
The Slow City contempt was started in a small Italian town in 1999 as an international movement to pursue slow life and return to the free, old agricultural era while protecting traditional culture and nature in a pollution-free environment.
In 1986, before Slow City started, the slow food movement that opposed fast food was in full swing in the town of Orvieto, Italy.
In order to save small traders, they did not allow large marts or fast food restaurants in, and made it possible to purchase clean and fresh food ingredients in small shops. They also created regulations that prevented people from other regions from buying and selling real estate, thereby helping local people to keep their family businesses alive for generations.

The operation of vehicles was also restricted to create a better environment for the village. To reduce air and noise pollution, a parking lot was built outside the village and visitors were allowed to enter the city only after parking.
The Plaza del Popolo, which was used as a parking lot, was soon followed by village markets, making it a place for people to buy and sell goods, make friendships, and fall in love.
Even now, there are still no vehicles running in the downtown area of Orvieto. Instead, they operate cable cars and eco-friendly public transportation facilities outside the city center.

In October 1999, the mayors of four small towns, including Orvieto, decided to expand the the Slow Food movement and put it into full swing.
They declared it a Slow City for the sake of the village Through the Slow City Movement is based on the philosophy of Slow Food, the residents prevented the village's reckless development and worked together to preserve the natural environment and local culture.
In the process, the Slowcity movement was naturally connected to the tourism industry, and achieved an effect of increasing the number of tourists while preserving the identity and uniqueness of the region.

Since the initial designation of Slow Cities, cities in many countries have joined the Slow City movement.
Each city is a developing village while maintaining its own identity. Currently, more than 200 cities around the world are members of Slow City movement, including Leschel in Poland, where you can practice a slow life with food, Svenborg in Denmark, where you can enjoy healing on a boat, Goolwa in Australia, where you can enjoy leisure activities, Pals in Spain, where you can appreciate history on foot, and Ludlow in England, the first slow city in the UK.
Mokpo was officially certified as the 253th Slow City in the world.
Mokpo City in Jeollanam-do received a certificate from the International Slow City Federation at the 2019 International Slow City General Assembly held in Orvieto, Italy in 2019, and was officially recognized as the 16th in Korea and the 253th in the world as an International Slow City.

The International Slow City Federation evaluated the policies of inheriting traditional values implemented by Mokpo City, such as respect for the value of the community and ecological environment, the revitalization of culture and arts, and efforts to develop creative Slow City food through the City of Taste brand, agrees with the philosophy and values of Slow City. It was favorably reviewed that the value of the modern historical and cultural heritage of the original downtown area is high, and the natural scenery in places such as Yudalsan, Oedaldo, and Dalido, is very beautiful, and slow food and community culture are well preserved, so it has unique attractions that cannot be seen in other slow cities.

Mokpo City has preserved its modern historical and cultural heritage well.
Buildings from our heartbreaking history are still located all over the city center. Since the painful past is also a part of our history, it is very important to preserve even the buildings filled with sorrow.
In the distant future, as time passes, our future generations will also have to remember it again and again.

When you walk slowly through the original downtown streets, you feel as if you've gone backwards in time using a time machine.
Various old buildings are seen among the low buildings. If you walk slowly for about an hour through the former Japanese Consulate in Mokpo, Dongbonwonsa, a Japanese Buddhist temple, Gyeongdong Cathedral with a magnificent exterior, Jeonggwangjeonghyewon, a Japanese-style temple, the former Mokpo Public Simsang Elementary School built by the Japanese for the education of their children, the former Mokpo District Office Library, an air-raid shelter built in case of aerial bombing, and the Japanese-style houses between the buildings, you will arrive at the coast of Mokpo.

In addition, you can feel the traces of the long years in Sihwa Alley, Seosan-dong, where Yeonhui's Supermarket is located, which appeared in the movie, "1987."
In the narrow alleys, small houses facing the sea are next to each other, and on the walls are murals and poems about the lives of the residents.
When I read the poems and appreciate the murals, walking slowly, without realizing it, a smile forms on my lips and sometimes my eyes get teary.

Next year, the 30-ri Mokpo Beach Road of Taste, an 11.7 km walking tour along the beach from Pyeonghwa Plaza to Mokpo Maritime University, will also be built.

The road consists of five sections: the Seaside Art Museum Road, the Environmental Protection Ecological Road, the Family Outing Road, the Mokpo Open Port History Road, and the Young Lovers' Road. It can be said that it will be a slow road where you can truly feel the beauty and taste of Mokpo.
